  1. 1906-1982. Soviet leader. A protege of Stalin
  2. and Khrushchev, he came to power (after he
  3. and Kosygin forced Khrushchev to resign) as
  4. general secretary of the Soviet Communist
  5. Party (CPSU) 1964-82 and was president
  6. 1977-82. Domestically he was conservative;
  7. abroad the USSR was established as a military
  8. and political superpower during the Brezhnev
  9. era, extending its influence in Africa and
  10. Asia. Brezhnev, born in the Ukraine, joined
  11. the CPSU in the 1920s. In 1938 he was made
  12. head of propaganda by the new Ukrainian party
  13. chief Khrushchev and ascended in the local
  14. party hierarchy. After World War II he caught
  15. the attention of the CPSU leader Stalin, who
  16. inducted Brezhnev into the secretariat and
  17. Politburo 1952. Brezhnev was removed from
  18. these posts after Stalin's death 1953, but
  19. returned 1956 with Khrushchev's patronage. In
  20. 1960, as criticism of Khrushchev mounted,
  21. Brezhnev was moved to the ceremonial post of
  22. state president and began to criticize
  23. Khrushchev's policies. Brezhnev stepped down
  24. as president 1963 and returned to the
  25. Politburo and secretariat. He was elected
  26. CPSU general secretary 1964, when Khrushchev
  27. was ousted, and gradually came to dominate
  28. the conservative and consensual coalition. In
  29. 1977 he regained the additional title of
  30. state president under the new constitution.
  31. He suffered an illness (thought to have been
  32. a stroke or heart attack) Mar-Apr 1976 that
  33. was believed to have affected his thought and
  34. speech so severely that he was not able to
  35. make decisions. These were made by his
  36. entourage, for example committing the troops
  37. to Afghanistan to prop up the government.
  38. Within the USSR, economic difficulties
  39. mounted; the Brezhnev era was a period of
  40. caution and stagnation, although outwardly
  41. imperialist.
  42.
